£30k project under way at war tribute
A recently-refurbished war memorial in Rowley Regis may undergo more work in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.
The large stone memorial in the grounds of St Giles Church in Church Road is engraved with the names of 98 men from Rowley village who died during the First World War.
Before the restoration many of the names had worn away but restorers and stone masons have carved out the names of the soldiers around the base of the monument as part of a £30,000 project. Councillor Chris Tranter said: "This is the final piece of the puzzle for the memorial and will help us commemorate the centennial of the conflict.
"A lot of work has gone into researching the names around the pillar and the feedback we have had from people so far has been really good." Much of the work that went into researching the names was completed by Richard Warby, who researched the cenotaph with his late father Malcolm.
