Amardeep Malhi, aged 22, was hit and killed by a DAF heavy goods vehicle on the Black Country New Road in Wednesbury.

A report from Pc Graham Harrison said Mr Malhi, of Hobart Road, Tipton, had already had a narrow miss with a lorry. In the report, Anthony Price said he was driving between

Wednesbury and West Bromwich at about 12.30am on May 12, 2012 when he saw a pedestrian step into the road.

Mr Price's vehicle came to a halt about 18in from Mr Malhi, who seemed upset. The second driver, Paul Jones, said in the report that he saw the parked lorry and slowed to about 30mph.

As he drove past the stationary lorry, he heard a 'loud bang' and realised he had hit a pedestrian.

Pc Harrison told the hearing Mr Malhi, who was twice the legal drink-drive limit, would have been visible to Mr Jones for less than a second.

The report also contained a statement from his friend Varinder Singh, who received a call from Mr Malhi at about 10.45pm asking to meet at Asda Great Bridge. He said Mr Malhi was drunk and wanted to go to a nightclub, but as it was late he did not want to go with him.

Ex-girlfriend Priya Sohal said in the report they had been together for two-and-a-half months before splitting up in the spring of 2011. The report stated: "She described how he did not accept the relationship had ended, and how on the evening of May 10, 2012 she began receiving upwards of 20 mobile telephone calls, followed by multiple text messages from Mr Malhi."

Coroner Robin Balmain recorded that he died of a traumatic brain injury due to a road traffic collision.
