Sandwell and Wolverhampton have some of the highest numbers of people receiving large amounts of benefits in the West Midlands according to new figures.

The Government has imposed a ban on anyone getting more than £26,000-a-year in benefits in a bid to get people off the dole and into work.

Figures show in November more than 27,000 households across the country had their benefits capped and since April 2013, almost 33,000 households have been capped overall.

The figures reveal 211 households in Sandwell have been capped so far along with 179 in Wolverhampton.

In Walsall it is 162 and in Dudley the number is 147.

There are 21 such households in Wyre Forest, 17 in Cannock Chase, 16 in Lichfield, 14 in South Staffordshire and 10 in Stafford.

The Government said that it was trying to ensure 'fairness' in the system by making sure no-one on benefits received above the average salary of a working person.
