Great War theme for historic Rugeley Charter Fair
Organisers of an historic Charter Fair have chosen to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War at this year's event, it was revealed today.
Rugeley's Charter Fair will take place on June 7 and will be themed around the Great War.
Thousands usually turn up to the fair in the town every year. Last year Rugeley was transformed into a sea of colour, music and entertainment for the annual event, which had a Jungle Fever theme.
Town council clerk Naazlin Somani said the 100th anniversary of the First World War meant a lot to the people of Rugeley.
She said: "It's a massive thing to commemorate. The festival committee decided to go with something that meant a lot to the people of Rugeley.
"We're still in the early stages of planning the fair. We're asking for businesses and individuals to get involved."
There will be a parade through the town at midday followed by an afternoon of activities looking back at the year 1914 and the war. Usually there is live music as well as stalls.
Rugeley town council chairman John Rowley added: "The committee came up with the theme. We'll be having the parade as usual and we are hoping to get some army groups along as well."
At last year's Charter Fair, around 8,000 people, young and old, joined in with the festivities. In 2012 the theme was the Olympic Games to celebrate the event being held in London.
The fair is organised by Rugeley Town Council and marks the signing of the market charter in 1259.The closing date for people to apply to run stalls or exhibitions at the fair is March 28. Call 01889 574074.
