Arrest over break-in at Wednesbury social club
A man has been arrested in connection with a break in at a Wednesbury social club, which was just recovering from a crash in which a lorry driver was killed.
Driver Henryk Jackowski, aged 55, died when his lorry collided with the Royal British Legion Club.
But just over a week later, the Church Hill club was dealt a second blow when it was raided. Members arrived yesterday to find two games machines had been forced open and cash had been stolen.
Police today said a 39-year-old man was arrested outside the club on suspicion of burglary and is currently in police custody.
Club members said the gaming machines were a 'big earner' for the venue.
Terry Fitzgerald Jnr, branch vice-chairman and the clubs bar manager said: "I can't believe someone would do this to us after what we have been through.
"It has left us worried that this is going to happen again."
The group had already begun to make repairs to their clubhouse just a week after the crash.
A studded wall put up in the days following the accident to make the club secure and parts of a hallway where the machines were located were also damaged in the incident.
Mr Fitzgerald added it was even more upsetting because it was one of the only parts of the club not damaged in the original crash.
Local Councillor Elaine Costigan spoke out following the break in, describing the act as 'despicable'.
