Four vehicles damaged as Midland Metro tram crashes in Wolverhampton

This was the scene after a tram collided with a van in Wolverhampton today.

Midland Metro services were forced to terminate at Priestfield following the collision in Bilston Road this morning.

The smash between the tram and van caused the van to shunt into three other vehicles on the road, according to police.

British Transport Police officers were called to the scene at around 9.47am.

National Express confirmed one of its vehicles had been involved in the smash.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has also been informed of the crash, in which nobody was injured. Transport police spokesman Brian Price said an investigation into what happened was ongoing.

He added: "Officers attended after a report of a collision involving a Midland Metro tram and a van.

"This caused the van to shunt into another three vehicles on the road. Nobody was injured as a result of the collision which occurred at low speed.

"Officers are currently trying to establish the full circumstances which led to the collision and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward."

He appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash to call police on 0800 40 50 40.

A full service between Birmingham and Wolverhampton had resumed on the route by around 11.15am, according to transport officials, although there were some slight delays for passengers as a result of this morning's drama.

National Express spokesman Jack Kelly said: "We terminated services at Priestfield due to a road traffic accident in Bilston Road.

"We can confirm one of our vehicles was involved."
