Man in rush hour Dudley railings crash dies
A motorist whose car crashed into a pelican crossing railing in the Black Country this morning has died.
The accident happened just before 6.20am on Halesowen Road, in the centre of Netherton, Dudley.
The road was closed between the junctions with Northfield Road and St John's Street, allowing only buses to go through.
Police said the driver, who was in a red Ford Mondeo and was aged in his late 50s, had died.
West Midlands Police spokesman Deb Edmonds said: "He is believed to have been taken ill at the wheel of his car before crashing."
The road was closed for about 45 minutes.
Nearby resident Craig Williams told how he rushed to help after he heard a car revving, looked out of his window and saw the vehicle embedded in the railings.
Mr Williams, aged 46, who lives above the Balti 4 U restaurant, described how he helped police at the scene.
He said: "When I looked down from my window there was a man on the street who opened the car door. Then I helped the police to get him out of the car."
