Tribute to fallen soldiers unveiled with permanent poppy memorial for Darlaston park
A permanent tribute to fallen soldiers has been unveiled in Darlaston.
The metal poppies have been installed on fencing at Kings Hill Park by councillors and members of Moxley and Dangerfield Action Group.
Councillor Paul Bott is behind the scheme, which has been funded by a £600 park improvement grant.
He said: "The poppies have been put on railings as a way of remembering our fallen soldiers.
"These men paid the ultimate sacrifice and gave their life for the people of Darlaston, so it is only fair that we remember them this way and never forget what they did. I think it is a very fitting tribute and I am proud to be a part of it.
"I have spent six months working on the project along with Councillor Chris Bott and members of Moxley and Dangerfield Action Group and Friends of Darlaston South Park.
"We are all very pleased with the outcome and I am sure that local residents will be also."
Mr Bott has also been working to save stained glass windows at an empty nearby church and said he is pleased that they will now be installed in special frames for a display.
He said: "The windows inside the former St Andrew's Church in Kings Hill will be installed at the people's town hall in Victoria Road.
"The three windows will go in specialist frames with LED lighting and they will commemorate the 28 soldiers who died for their town and country.
"They depict the biblical Good Shepherd, St Andrew and St George and they were installed in 1919 as a memorial to those who died in the First World War.
"It has taken around 12 months to get everything organised and I am grateful to Moxley and Dangerfield Action Group and Friends of Darlaston South for their support with both of these wonderful projects."
