Glenn Medeiros Cradley Heath Christmas rumours quashed by council

He was the fuzzy-haired pop star from Hawaii who had a string of hits in the 1980s. But Glenn Medeiros has been the subject of much discussion in the Black Country this week, after rumours spread that he was going to turning on Cradley Heath's Christmas lights.

But council bosses were surprised when they heard he was rumoured to be switching on the town's lights – and even had to put a message out on Twitter to quell the hearsay.

On Sandwell Council's official Twitter account, they said:

Council leader Councillor Darren Cooper said: "It's a bit of a strange one. Apparently the rumour started on one of the local selling pages on Facebook and someone told us about it on our council Facebook page.

"It's quite funny. I did wonder what Mr Medeiros would make of it as I understand he's now the vice principal of a school in Honolulu, Hawaii – which is a bit of a distance from Cradley Heath."

"Our Christmas light switch-ons are always really popular and I hope everyone has a great time with Father Christmas and the Deputy Mayor on Saturday in Cradley Heath – even if Glenn Medeiros isn't going to be there.

"Reports of Rick Astley switching on the lights in Oldbury are also sadly untrue.' he joked.

The Cradley Heath event will start at 3pm on High Street. The lights will be switched on at 6pm.
