30 flee homes as fire breaks out at Wednesfield flats
[gallery link="file" order="DESC"] A high rise home was wrecked as more 30 firefighters battled with a blaze in a recently refurbished tower block.
Up to 30 people fled from their flats after a resident returned to find his 16th floor home ablaze.
One of the two bedrooms was filled with smoke and he immediately raised the alarm sending seven fire appliances to 19-storey William Bentley Court, in Graiseley Lane, Wednesfield.
A 63-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.
Network rail worker Nick Davis, aged 41, who lives on the top floor and was among those who evacuated their homes, said: "A friend who lives two floors below came running up to my flat and started frantically banging the door.
"I asked what was going on and he told me to get out because there was a fire on the 16th floor. As we were leaving the first fire engines were arriving. They started to pump water up through the dry riser to fight the fire but somebody must have left a valve open on the top floor because water came pouring out there.
"I put towels down by my front door to stop it going in there before getting out but it started to leak down to the floors below. It sent through all the electrical cupboards which could have caused a massive incident because water and electricity do no mix."
The blaze broke out at about 5pm yesterday and firefighters left the scene at around 9pm.
