The dogs were rounded up after officers and specialist dog handlers were called to a wooded area between Kingswinford and Wordsley today.

Around 85 pupils, aged seven to nine, from Fairhaven Primary School, in Wordsley, had been out for a walk this morning.

They had reached Ridgehill Wood, off Lawnswood, when a staff member spotted the out of control dogs.

Police were called out to search the woodland and surrounding areas.

A police dog handler restrained one of the dogs in nearby Quayle Grove, Wordsley at 10.30am. The second was found around 5pm in Dudley Road, Himley.

Fairhaven headteacher Dave Rowe arranged for a coach to ferry the children back to school this morning.

He said: "We did not know if the dog was around the estate on the walk back so we thought it best to get a coach to bring them back," he said.

They called Kingswinford Coachways, based in Pensnett High Street, who immediately despatched a coach to collect the children.

And after hearing about their predicament bosses at the firm decided to transport them back free of charge.

"We are so grateful for them for coming out so quickly and for saying we didn't have to pay even though we offered," Mr Rowe said.

Dog walker Philip Davies, aged 65, of Kingswinford, who is a member of the group Dog R Us, said: "I was out at the time and told they were rottweilers."
