The main post office branch in Wolverhampton is to move to a new home less than 20ft away from where it is currently based, it has been confirmed.

Plans were announced to move the Lichfield Street branch into the Nisa Local Store on the opposite side of the road earlier this year and since then there has been a consultation over the proposals.

Bosses have today announced that the scheme will go ahead.

The Post Office said the move – part of a modernisation programme – would meet the needs of the Wolverhampton community.

The current branch opens from 9am to 5.30pm Tuesdays to Saturdays, as well as from 8.30am to 5.30pm on Mondays.

The Nisa branch would open from 8.30am to 5.30pm Mondays to Saturdays, but post office services would also be available from the retail counter between 7am and 9pm seven days a week.

There will also be seven serving positions in the post office section of the shop.

However the plans appeared to confuse members of the public, with some saying they were baffled by the move.

One of the main concerns raised was that money was being spent for little or no gain.

Some people did voice support for the extended hours and that a central location for the branch was being maintained, but were confused as to why such a move was necessary.

Post Office regional network manager Simon Drinkwater said: "We understand how important having a post office is to residents in Wolverhampton and we are confident that this new modern branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

"The modernisation is part of a major investment programme to convert the post office network to new-style branches and this investment, the largest in the history of the post office, makes a commitment to no more branch closure programmes."
