Homes and businesses suffered the power loss at around 8.40am.
Engineers were called to fix the problem and power was restored to most properties within an hour.
Western Power Distribution spokeswoman Stella Hayward said the power cut affected 800 properties.
She added that it was believed the problem had been caused by a fault with an underground cable.
Among the properties affected was The Allenbrook Nursing Home in Spies Lane, where power was off for around two hours.
Staff said was restored there by 10am.
