They donned everything from bunny ears to bright pink tutus but hundreds of women who turned out for a charity run all had one thing in common – raising money for a good cause.

The Race for Life Twilight event saw the ladies covering 5k once darkness had fallen in the grounds of Himley Hall near Dudley and Wolverhampton. It is the first time it has been held and was organised to raise money for Cancer Research.

Many of those who took part dressed in pink as part of their fundraising drive, some even took along their dogs who were also kitted out in pink gear such as legwarmers, to join them on the course.

A minute's silence was held before the 558 women taking part set off.

Officials said they expected the event to bring in around £55,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Among those taking part in the event was sisters Sue and Jo Myhill, both from Dudley, who lost both parents, Derek and Barbara, to the illness. Sue, 43, of At Mark's Road, said: "Obviously raising money for this cause means a lot to us."

Jo, 45, who lives in the same road as her sister, added: "Basically it is putting something back in for all the help our parents received.

"It is a very good cause and does a lot of good. We have really been looking forward to the event. Neither of us has taken part in a twilight walk before."

Julie Lane, 53, of Oldbury, was joined on the walk by family and friends.

"We have all lost loved ones to cancer so wanted to support the charity. It is a really wonderful atmosphere with everyone joining together to raise money for a good cause." She said they had raised around £250 for the charity through sponsorship.

Women taking part in the race were given the choice of running, jogging or walking around the circuit.

Event manager Emily Thompson said: "We have had around 558 take part in the event in all. We are really pleased so many women have come along to take part. We hope the event will have raised £55,000."
