Four crews and 20 firefighters from stations across the region were called to a fire at a semi-detached property that is used as a children's centre on Hamstead Road on the border of Sandwell and Handsworth at 11.20pm on Friday.

One of the firefighters fell through a metal roof and down a 25ft lift shaft. He was rescued by his colleagues before receiving medical help from West Midlands Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.

The fire, started by an electrical fault, had spread throughout the building and hit the roof.
