Around 650 people took part in the event yesterday which had been organised by Walsall Rotary Club.

Crowds of runners signed up for a 10k or 5k run, while others took part in the 3k family walk.

This year's event, which also allowed teams to compete for trophies, pulled in more than £17,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, Action for Children and Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Everyone who took part received medals and trophies were handed to those who came in first, second and third. Amongst those running the 5k race was Lorraine Westwood, of Pelsall, who was joined by her 17-year-old daughter Charlotte, who dressed as a wolf, and fellow members of the Slimming World club in Brownhills.

The 50-year-old mother-of-one, of Marlpool Drive, said: "Three of us are members of Slimming World in Brownhills and we've lost just over 15 stone in two years.

"It inspired us to take part in the run. I think we've raised over £150. We all regularly run now and we did the Race for Life at the arboretum this year."

Christine Cockayne, who organised the event, said: "We had more people register online this year before the event.

"This year we also did team events in the 5k and 10k runs and there were trophies for the winners.

"Everyone who took part was given a medal. The weather was glorious this year.

"It's the nicest weather we've had for the run in years.

"We're very happy with how it went. We won't know how much has been raised until we collect all the sponsorship money in but it will be more than £17,000."
