Comrades of the Staffordshire Regiment were among those who turned out for the special ceremony in Moxley.

The dedication ceremony marked the end of a £45,000 revamp of Moxley War Memorial.

Long-awaited work to refurbish it began in September last year and has seen new plaques installed and improved brickwork, benches and railings put in place.

The ceremony began with a service at nearby All Saints Church before the crowd headed out into yesterday's sunshine to unveil the memorial and lay wreaths.

The Last Post was also sounded and a two minutes silence held to remember those who had paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The names of all 98 soldiers on the memorial were each read out in turn by residents who have served in the war or are relatives of the fallen.

Second World War veteran Ron Mattison, of Great Wyrley, unveiled one of the new plaques on the memorial.

He wore a First World War uniform for the event.

The 87-year-old, who served in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) from 1944 to 1949 and is a member of the Staffordshire Regimental Association, said he was delighted at the turn out for the poignant event.

"Today has been excellent and it has been such a moving ceremony," he said.
