Derelict shop in Wolverhampton is to be used again
Housing chiefs will buy a derelict shop unit in Wolverhampton which has been empty for 21 years in a bid to finally get it back into use.
City council bosses and Heantun Housing Association are using Government-granted compulsory purchase powers to snap up the former Heaths fish, meat and vegetables shop in Church Street, Bilston.
The unit has been empty since 1992 and residents have complained it has now become an eyesore in the town.
The windows are boarded up and the faded sign at the front of the shop remains in place.
The housing group has set aside £50,000 for the purchase and the council is expecting to contribute some money as well.
A report to an upcoming cabinet resources panel meeting at the council states: "The property occupies a prominent position on the main shopping thoroughfare in Bilston and is adjacent to Bilston Central Metro station.
"It is boarded up and in a state of dilapidation."
Ward councillor Steve Simkins said he was pleased that something was being done. "It has always been an iconic building and I remember when they used to sell fish there when I was a kid," he said,
"I'm glad things are moving forward and good efforts are being made to get it back into use."
