A fault in a 11,000-volt cable left 2,411 customers in the dark in the Wednesfield and Heath Town areas of Wolverhampton last night, just after 7pm.

Around 1,000 customers had power restored within 34 minutes and 1,073 more 10 minutes later.

A further 212 had the lights working again after a wait of just over an hour and the remainder had their power back within one hour and 34 minutes of the fault.

The cut set off burglar and fire alarms and as a result both Bilston and Fallings Park fire stations responded to a series of calls that turned out to be false.

Western Power (WPD) said the source of the problem had been identified and supplies were being switched round the location from other parts of the power system until repairs were completed.
