The 39-year-old victim, from Stafford, had called his family on the way home at around 10pm last night to say he would be delayed due to a road closure.

But his car was found at around 4.50am today on the Congreve Road between Lapley and Congreve, near Penkridge.

He was confirmed dead at the scene.

The road was closed off today between Lapley Lane and Pinfold Lane while investigations are carried out.

Pc Andy Hogan, investigating officer for Staffordshire Police, said: "We know that the driver left the West Mercia area and contacted his family on his way home to advise he would be delayed due to a road closure just before 10pm.

"However, the vehicle was not found until 4.50am by a passing motorist, so we are appealing for anyone who may have seen the car in the area between these times to get in touch."

Firefighters from Penkridge, Stafford and Brewood all attended along with paramedics.

Suzie Fothergill, spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "Crews arrived to find a car on its roof. "Its driver was confirmed dead at the scene."

Staffordshire Police have launched an appeal for information.

Witnesses are asked to call Pc Andy Hogan on 101.
