A young boy who died in an accident at a public swimming pool in Wolverhampton has been fondly remembered at a charity fun day held in his memory.

The event at Low Hill Community Centre had been organised by work mates of Pam Badhan, the aunt of eight-year-old Suraj Mall who died at the Wolverhampton Swimming and Fitness Centre in Bentley Bridge in 2008.

It raised £1,500 for the Eczema Society as the youngster suffered from severe eczema. His mother Mrs Laj Kaur said: "I have been wanting to do something for along time but never had the courage, however the staff at the care home where my sister works organised it all.

"They have been marvellous and their commitment to the cause has touched all of the family. Everybody was so supportive and I would like to thank each and everyone of them."

Mrs Kaur, whose five other children aged, two to 19, were at the fun day along with the cousins of Suraj from Pembroke Avenue, Priestfield who drowned at Wolverhampton Swimming and Fitness Centre in Bentley Bridge on February 10, 2008, added: "My workmates at Royal Mail raised £550 towards the event. It has warmed my heart that so many people have been thinking of my son.

"He was always smiling. That is the way I want to remember him and I am so grateful to those who helped me achieve that."

The organisers of the fun day were sisters Pat Stokes and Sue Caine who work with Mrs Badhan at the Meadowcroft Residential Care Home in Bushbury.

Residents gave items that were sold from stalls during the event on Saturday.
