Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital treats record numbers

Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital endured its busiest ever month in A&E in July, new figures have revealed.

The unit – which has been under unprecedented pressures in the past year – saw 10,018 patients come through its doors, an average of 323 a day.

That smashed the monthly record by around 600 patients, with the previous highest being recorded as 9,429 last July.

It comes as the hospital prepares to take on even more patients after the decommissioning of services from Stafford Hospital.

Bosses today said part of the increase could be attributed to the warm weather as there was a slight increase in patients suffering from respiratory problems, as well as minor complaints such as bee stings and sunburn.

Despite the record month staff still hit all of their performance targets, including that of seeing 95 per cent of patients within four hours, which is a national guideline.

Chief operating officer Gwen Nuttall said it was very pleasing that staff had performed so well under such tremendous pressure.

"Staff coped remarkably well and I'm absolutely delighted we've achieved the standards, but more important than that people are getting a good service," she added.
