Roads flooded in Midlands downpours

Heavy rain led to flooding in parts of the Midlands as roads became waterlogged.

Thunderous black skies descended over Sandwell yesterday, turning day into night, as severe showers lashed down.

In Oldbury, there was flooding on the A4123 Wolverhampton Road in the direction of Dudley.

Meanwhile, driver negotiated water several inches deep in Bromford Road, outside Sandwell & Dudley railway station.

A picture captured by Twitter user Mark Masterson showed the extent of the flooding, described by Mr Masterson as the 'new outdoor swimming pool in West Brom/Oldbury'.

In Kidderminster, firefighters were called to sheltered housing flats at Lucy Edwards Court in Sutton Road after water leaked from a flat roof in heavy rain and set off the fire alarm at 2pm.

And at 2.30pm, an electrical surge caused by leaking water set off the fire alarm at flats in Avon Road, Kidderminster. Despite the heavy rain, forecasters have said the hot weather is expected to return this week, with temperatures up to 30C in the South East on Thursday.

The Environment Agency had flood alerts in place on the River Trent in Derbyshire, and the Lower River Eden in Cumbria. Paul Knightley, a senior forecaster with MeteoGroup, said some areas were due to see heavy rain today

Temperatures will rise to 28 or 29C in the Midlands later this week.
