Oars well that ends well at Bewdley regatta

More than 1,800 rowers from clubs across the country took to the water for an annual regatta.

Hundreds of spectators lined the banks of the River Severn at Bewdley to watch the action unfold over the two-day event.

Officials from event organiser Bewdley Rowing Club today said it had been a 'hugely successful' year for the regatta.

Last year the club was forced to cancel the Bewdley Regatta due to high water levels along the river.

But this year more than made up for the disappointment as 250 crews competed on Saturday and 296 took part in races yesterday. Races are held every three minutes with 800-metre and 600-metre events taking place over the course of the weekend.

Rowers from the club were pitted against competition from Worcester, Stratford, Warwick and even a team who travelled from Manchester to take part.

Bosses at the rowing club said 33 clubs had taken part in this year's event.

Spokesman for the club Simon Collingridge said: "It is great to see the regatta taking place as always and the number of people who have taken part this year has been extraordinary."
