The budget supermarket chain is in discussions with Wolverhampton City Council and three businessmen who own the Compton Road site. They unveiled proposals to rename it The Icon Centre featuring shops and a care home.

Aldi is the first potential new tenant to emerge since Former Poundland owner Steve Smith, Scott Bernard of Mount Hotel owners Aspen Leisure and family-run Select Healthcare, and Rodger Danks of property company RDI Group, bought the land from the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust last year.

Along with the shops, a former nurses' accommodation block will be knocked down and replaced with a new care home at the site in Chapel Ash.

Wolverhampton City Council regeneration chief Peter Bilson said: "Aldi is interested in being one of the retailers in the mixed use development but we cannot assume anything at the moment."

Aldi spokesman Jonathan Neale today confirmed discussions were ongoing.
