A residents' action group has launched an online petition calling for more public consultation on controversial plans for 750 homes in Shrewsbury.

Fifty concerned residents have signed the e-petition on Shropshire Council's website, claiming they were not "adequately notified" about plans for a major new development at Welshpool Road, Bicton Heath.

Earlier this month, the council unveiled plans for 750 homes in west Shrewsbury and the building of a major link road between the A5 bypass and the Holyhead Road.

The draft masterplan, also includes proposals for a new "business campus" off Clayton Way and the expansion of Oxon Business Park.

There will also be scope for a new primary school. But some residents have raised concerns at the scale of the development, claiming it will have a "devastating" effect on the character of the area. The online petition calls on the council to extend the consultation period by 16 weeks so that residents can have more time to make comments.

It was launched following a public meeting held in Bicton last week which was attended by more than 40 residents.

Bicton Heath resident Jan Bevan was one of the organisers of the meeting. She said: "In a nutshell, what our council are proposing to do is to build on every field and green space between Shelton Water Tower and the A5. "If enough people oppose this massive development, the council will have to rethink."

Resident David Kilby, the chairman of the Shropshire Playing Fields Association, was present at the meeting. He said: "The thing that came through was that not enough people really knew about the proposals. We want the council to extend the consultation."
