The Old Hill Masjid and Community Group has applied to Sandwell Council to change the use of the building on Halesowen Road.

The group said their current base on Highgate Road is no longer big enough and they wish to convert the new building into a mosque.

A Facebook group for the plan states they are trying to raise £350,000 to undertake the extensive refurbishments needed.

The Old Hill Masjid and Community Group has been part of the community for almost 20 years, and bosses state unless they relocate they will not be able to cater for the needs of the community.

The new building was a former Methodist church, but has also been used as a martial arts centre, and for commercial use. It is now virtually derelict, and considered an eyesore by locals.

The work will see the Victorian building extensively refurbished , and it will include the restoration of certain features in the building and a conversion to incorporate a main prayer hall, ancillary spaces and community and teaching facilities.

Old Hill Councillor Julie Webb said the building is currently a 'pigeon loft'.

She said: "It is virtually derelict at the moment and I know the Old Hill Masjid and Community Group have proposed to take it on as their new base.

"Their current centre is very small, just a small house really and their are issues with parking particularly at prayer time."

She said the site would be looked at and it was important to consult with neighbours.
