The Staffordshire branch of Campaign to Protect Rural England has responded to the draft environmental statement for the first phase of HS2.
Group spokesman Phil Goode today said the rail link will ruin the peace, tranquillity and seclusion of the Staffordshire countryside, cutting through villages near Stafford and Lichfield.
"The past half-century has seen a wide dispersal of housing from town to villages, hamlets or individual properties much loved and cherished by their owners," he said.
"We question the viability – in environmental terms – of the whole scheme and the chosen route alignment."
