Thousands flock to see launch of £200m West Bromwich New Square complex

Thousands of people flocked to West Bromwich's £200 million New Square development on its first day.

By lunchtime yesterday more than 8,000 people had visited the centre, and the car park was so busy at one point that bosses had to close it for 45 minutes, because it was full.

Shoppers queued to get into the Next and Tesco Extra stores yesterday morning.

Tesco Extra was the first store to open its doors at 8am, followed by retailers Bank, JD Sports, Outfit, Deichmann and Phones4U.

A £3m five-screen Odeon cinema opened today.

Meanwhile, restaurants Prezzo and Harvester, also opened yesterday.

Nando's is due to open mid to late August.

Bosses of the development have promised a weekend of free events and giveaways to celebrate it opening.
