The new stations will be equipped with new computer systems and have space for more community activities such as student firefighter courses. There will also be rooms for community groups, while stations crewed round the clock will have fitness equipment to be used by supervised groups.

Cannock Chase councillor Derek Davis, who was chairman of the fire authority from 1989 to 2009, said: "Modernisation is a good thing to improve thing for the community. They aren't just fire stations these days they are community buildings."

The government signed off the £45m deal in London with developers blue3 consortium this week.
