Essington crematorium build to target waiting times

A new crematorium is to be built in South Staffordshire, under new plans unveiled this afternoon. The crematorium would be built in Essington and would cater for 1,600 cremations every year.

The plans have been drawn up in a bid to drastically cut waiting times for cremations in South Staffordshire, council bosses said as they revealed the plans today.

They have identified a 39-acre woodland site off Broad Lane for the development.

Twelve acres of the site would be used as a crematorium and the rest of the site would remain as woodland.

Sites have opened in Great Wyrley and Wombourne in the past four years but the soaring demand has remained. The move has been welcomed by South Staffordshire Council bosses who hope it will help cut down on waiting times for cremations.

Jackie Small, director environmental services, said: "There clearly is a desire to see how we can meet the demand."

Council leader Brian Edwards added the crematorium would provide a 'calm setting' for mourners.
