Doggles make Bugsy coolest pooch in town
Bugsy is proving he is the coolest dog in town with his specially-designed shades.
But the crossbreed pooch is not just making a fashion statement – he has been prescribed 'Doggles' in a bid to cope with his eye condition.
Bugsy, owned by David Jones, from Tipton, suffers from an eye condition called pannus.
The condition causes discomfort, redness and pigment changes on the surface of the eye which can become especially severe when exposed to ultra violet light.
After considering several options, White Cross Vets on Regent Road in Tividale found 10-year-old Bugsy a pair of Doggles that he can wear outside to block the UV light and make his eyes much more comfortable.
The Doggles are available from online suppliers of accessories for pets. Mr Jones, aged 74, who has owned Bugsy for seven years, said: "It was around four year ago when I noticed he was having problems.
"His eyes would run and become all red and they were very uncomfortable. I went to several vets to try and find out what was wrong. But I'm pleased I have now found a solution."
Mr Jones, from Aston Road, added: "At first Bugsy wanted to get them off his face. But he knows who's boss so I made him keep them on.
"After a while I think he started to realise they were doing him good. He has been so much better."
The father-of two and grandfather-of-three said Bugsy now wears the Doggles all the time, and is back to his old self, and enjoying being outside. "He is such a good companion and is always by my side so it is great to make him more comfortable," he added.
"Quite a few people comment when I'm out. Most of the time people ask me what's wrong with his eyes.
"The kids just think he is trying be cool."
Bonnie Leibowitch, clinic director from White Cross Vets, said: "Mr Jones felt Bugsy was really suffering with his eyes and noticed the problem was worse on sunny days.
"This meant he had to restrict Bugsy's walks during the daytime which was extremely sad, especially with summer approaching. Eye drops helped but Mr Jones wanted to do more.
"We decided to try fitting him with a pair of Doggles and they've been a huge success.
"Bugsy can now live a normal life and enjoy a walk whatever the weather so we're delighted with the results."She added: "Plus he looks extremely stylish and has to be the coolest dog in Tividale."
