Wolverhampton West Park's parking restrictions drawn up

A new raft of parking restrictions are set to be introduced around Wolverhampton's West Park after complaints from residents.

Fed-up householders living near the beauty spot have claimed they are unable to park near their homes as office workers are hogging the spaces by leaving their cars there all day while they go to work.

There have also been complaints that visitors to the park can't find anywhere to park when they arrive at the site.

Council bosses have already attempted to solve the long-running problem several times before and have now drawn up the new restrictions in their latest attempt to resolve the issue.

The new plans would see drivers only able to leave their car for two hours on sixty spaces on the streets around the park.

Wolverhampton City Council spokesman Gurdip Thandi said: "Concerns were raised by local residents via petition about the lack of available parking for them and for visitors to the park in Park Road West and Park Road East due to people leaving their cars for long periods every day.

"A parking survey was undertaken and it is now proposed that limited waiting restrictions be put in place between 9am and 2pm, Monday to Friday, on two sections of parking areas in Park Road West and Park Road East between Summerfield Road and Park Crescent.

"This will restrict parking to a maximum two hours and with no return for two hours, effecting approximately 60 parking spaces."

He added: "An additional three disabled parking bays are also planned to be installed."

Park ward councillor Claire Darke added: "People like to be able to park near their own homes."

Council bosses previously introduced time limits on 22 parking spaces near to the park back in 2010 after a petition from 100 users of West Park tea room, who claimed they could find nowhere to park.

Wooden bollards have also been installed on grass verges surrounding the park in a bid to prevent drivers from parking on them during major events such as the City Show which will be held at the site on July 14.

Charges are being introduced for the show for the first time this year as the cash-strapped council tries to save money. It will cost £2 for adults and £1 for children to attend.
