The scheme, which included a 328ft chimney visible from the M54 and the A449 Stafford Road, would have created 70 jobs and would have seen wood, sawdust and other 'biomass' burned in order to generate electricity.

The plant would have even heated the business park.

But developers Express Power Ltd today revealed they had pulled out of the project as they have other commitments.

The firm came up with the original idea for the incinerator and drew up the proposals.

Paul Zanin, projects planning director at EPL, said: "Our company has made the decision not to take the project any further.

"We have got other projects taking up our resources and we will now be focusing on those instead. "

Residents living near the proposed site in Wobaston Road, Fordhouses, had raised fears the plant would create noise and traffic. But they said the developers had 'gone quiet' in recent weeks – leaving them wondering whether the work would go ahead.

Ward councillor Ian Angus, who campaigned against the proposals, said today: "Residents will be delighted as this has been a source of worry and concern for them."
