More than 100 concerned residents called Severn Trent to report the problem which affected homes in the west of the city, including Penn.

Bosses say they can't say how many properties were hit by the issue which first arose yesterday afternoon but admitted it was still affecting a small number of people today.

Severn Trent spokeswoman Sarah Jane-Dean said: "We'd like to apologise to customers in parts of Wolverhampton who have been affected by discoloured water.

"We first received reports of discoloured water from customers yesterday afternoon.

"Following investigations, we discovered this had been caused by an issue within our network that increased water flow within the main pipes and disturbed sediment which can make the water look brown or yellow. Although unappealing, discoloured water is still safe to drink."

She said most people's supply was back to normal by 9pm last night but those still affected should run their cold water tap for a short time to clear it.
