Motorcyclists fighting for lives after Wednesbury crash

Two off-road motorcyclists today remained in hospital fighting for their lives after a crash in Wednesbury.

The two men, aged 24 and 21, had to be airlifted to hospital after the crash on wasteground off St Paul's Road.

Police today said they were working with businesses and Sandwell Council to tackle the issue of illegal off-road bikes in the Wednesbury area.

Officers are increasing patrols in the area and raising awareness with youngsters of the dangers of riding off road bikes and the risks they can pose to other people.

They have also spoken to the land owner about installing fencing around the area to stop off road bikes getting access.

Sgt Stuart Roberts, investigating the crash at 6.20pm on Sunday, said: "This latest collision comes at a time when officers are cracking down on the problem of off-road bikes in the area and following concerns from the local community.

"This is will be an ongoing operation and motorbikes will be seized in future if these activities continue.

"Officers have powers to stop riders and, following a warning, remove or seize the vehicle if they continue to use it anti-socially. "

Police hope sharing information will encourage parents will think twice before purchasing off-road bikes and mini-motos for youngsters.

Sgt Roberts added: "The illegal use of these vehicles can cause significant damage to parkland and often results in calls from concerned residents about anti-social behaviour and noise nuisance.

"Those found in possession of illegal motorbikes can be prosecuted, fined and even disqualified from driving once of legal age. Parents who willingly let their children use these bikes also face having their licenses revoked."
