College bosses have revealed they need to save a further £3 million in the current academic year, after voluntary redundancies clawed back £2.75m.

They said that advanced notifications of redundancy had now been handed to 95 members of staff.

Those at risk include 36 lecturers, 41 clerical jobs,15 managers and three technical staff. A consultation has been launched between University and College Union (UCU) and Unison.

The proposed cuts would be from the college's current workforce of 760 employees spread across campuses in Paget Road, Compton, and Wellington Road in Bilston as well as Metro One in the city centre and Newhampton Centre in Whitmore Reans.

The proposed job losses come despite Ofsted's most recent inspection of the college, declaring it had made progress but still required improvement overall, after its previous inadequate rating 15 months earlier.

Nick Varney, from UCU, said: "We entered formal consultations and it is the aim of the UCU to mitigate the need for any compulsory redundancies."

Mark Robertson, principal of the college for less than two months, said: "Particularly in the current financial climate, the college has to ensure that it uses its funding to create the maximum benefit for largest possible number of students."
