It is believed she had just stepped off a bus when she was hit by a green Renault Clio while crossing Moseley Road.

She was airlifted to hospital with a broken leg and arm. She also suffered a minor head injury and was today being treated at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Residents and passers-by flocked to help the injured girl after she was knocked down at around 3.20pm yesterday.

Passers-by rushed to help the girl before paramedics arrived, and police came across the aftermath as they were driving past.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said he heard screams and saw a group of youngsters 'panicking' as the girl lay on the ground. He said crowds of pupils from St Thomas More School in nearby Darlaston Lane were walking home.

After the smash the bus remained par-ked at the bus stop and the car was in the middle of the road, where it had stop-ped when the girl was hit. The passenger side of the windscreen of the car was cracked.

Richard Thompson, aged 35, of Moseley Road, left his house just after the crash happened. The office worker said: "I saw a girl lying on the floor and there were a few people around her. She didn't seem to be moving and I think everyone knew she was in a bad way.

"There were some school kids nearby too and they looked really upset. It was shocking to see a girl just lying there like that."

The air ambulance landed in the middle of Moseley Road before taking the girl to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The junction of Moseley Road, Darlaston Road and Bilston Road was closed for about four hours while police carried out investigations. Police from the Regional Collision Investigation Unit are urging anyone who was in the area to contact them on 101.
