Thomas Smith, who attended Kingsmead Technology College in Hednesford, died during half term.

The year eight pupil was today described as a 'popular young man' by Kingsmead headteacher Ian Bryant.

In a letter to parents, Mr Bryant said Thomas had died 'suddenly and unexpectedly'. He said:?"Tom joined Kingsmead in September 2011 from Heath Hayes primary school," he said.

"He was a popular young man and a lovely student to teach.

"Tom's passion was football and he could be found playing every lunchtime on the grass area behind the sixth form block. He represented the school at football and was first choice right back.

"Tom's friends talk about his quiet ways and love of football, scooters and cars – he could name every make and model as they drove past. Tom will be a sorely missed member of our school community."

As well as playing for the school team, Thomas played football for Chasetown Scholars Under 13s.

Chasetown Scholars Under-13s coach Tony Hardwick said Thomas had died in Wales and that his family were still there and had not yet returned to their home in Cannock.

Pupils at Kingsmead Technology College wore or carried blue items on Monday as a tribute to Aston Villa fan Thomas.

They also held a one-minute silence and a one minute applause in his memory.

A tree at the school in Kings Avenue has been covered with poems and tributes to the youngster.

A book of condolences has been opened at the school for staff and students to record their memories and messages.

It will be passed on to Thomas' family, along with a collection of photographs and videos of him being collected by the school.

The school is offering counselling for pupils struggling to come to terms with the youngster's death and has assured parents there is no risk of meningitis infection to pupils at Kingsmead.
