Pub giant JD Wetherspoons had been poised to take over The Bulls Head, in Park Street.
But the firm today confirmed it was no longer taking over the building, although bosses claimed the chain was still interested in the town.
Planning permission had been granted in March last year to extend and refurbish the 80-year-old former watering hole.
Eddie Gershon, spokesman for Wetherspoons, said: "This was a site Wetherspoons was considering but is not now proceeding with it.
"But it is still looking at the town," he added.
The pub which closed in 2007, was badly damaged in a suspected arson attack in 2011.
