Kenny Jackett unveiled at Wolves - As it happened

New Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett today targeted immediate promotion as he was unveiled as Molineux's 'Special One'.

The 51-year-old held his first press conference at the club's Compton Park training ground after beating off 75 other applicants to land the job.

His reign got underway with chief executive Jez Moxey comparing him to returning Chelsea legend Jose Mourinho.

Wolves have slumped from the Premier League to League One with back-to-back relegations and a sequence of four previous managers in the last 16 months.

But the new man at the helm said he hoped to bring the team's slump to a halt.

"Promotion is our target, definitely," said Jackett today, adding: "We want to get promoted this season. Is it going to be easy? No - but it's a challenge we're all relishing and looking forward to.

"My message to the players is that they're at a fantastic club and they have the opportunity to be successful here."

Jackett was announced on Friday afternoon as Dean Saunders' successor despite a lukewarm response from fans.

Fewer than five per cent of supporters who voted in an Express & Star online poll backed Jackett for the job.

But he was backed today by Moxey as he was paraded before the media today for the first time, days before Chelsea are expected to confirm Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge.

Moxey said: "I want to start by apologising to Chelsea for usurping their announcement on the re-arrival of the special one by announcing the arrival of Wolverhampton Wanderers' 'special one', Kenny Jackett."

Jackett also pledged to win over sceptical fans.

"One thing I know is if you put the performances on and get the results as a player this crowd will follow you and follow you in their numbers," he said.

"Then some positive momentum can take this club a long way."

Chairman and owner Steve Morgan, who had the final say on Jackett's appointment, was absent from today's press conference with Moxey insisting: "Steve is in London doing what he does best – earning money for the club.

"He would have liked to have been here but had business commitments.

"There is no hidden agenda. If he could have been here he would have been."

Jackett was one of 12 candidates interviewed by new head of football development and recruitment Kevin Thelwell, who led the selection process before Moxey and Morgan interviewed a smaller shortlist.

The former Wales international beat off rivals including ex-Bolton manager Owen Coyle and former England boss Steve McClaren to land the role.

Thelwell said: "We all recognised that the process had to be very stringent and robust.

"It's difficult for the fans to recognise that at times because they are keen for us to appoint somebody and get going and moving forwards.

"I appreciate that completely but I hope they also understand that it was important to get the right person and I very much think we've done that with Kenny.

"He is highly experienced and he's got a huge amount of expertise.

"He's got promotion experience on his CV at all levels and he's got experience of League One, which is the league we find ourselves in.

"He has also been very strong in the Championship and has been promoted as a coach with Watford into the Premier League.

"We have identified and recruited a head coach who has the potential to be as strong as anybody in the country."
