Police said the man, reported to be Jamie Reynolds, who was arrested in Glasgow on suspicion of kidnap was rearrested on suspicion of the 17-year-old's murder after being brought back to Telford from Scotland.

The dramatic development came just hours after Georgia's boyfriend Matthew Bird posted a message on Facebook declaring: "I love you and I will find you."

Georgia has not been seen since Sunday evening.

Superintendent Nav Malik, from West Mercia Police today said: "The arrest of the suspect for murder follows developments in the investigation since yesterday afternoon but for operational reasons and because we have someone in custody I am not able to give any further details about that at this time.

"However I would like to stress that Georgia Williams has still not been found and achieving that is still the primary focus of our investigation. Therefore we still urgently want people to come forward and tell us if they have seen or had any contact with her since 7.30pm on Sunday when she left the family home.

"I would remind people that Georgia, who is white, 5ft 3ins, slim and with long, dyed, red hair, was last seen wearing a waist-length black leather jacket over a white T shirt which has a London bus motif on it. She was also wearing black, skinny jeans and flat, black suede slip-on shoes.

Georgia's boyfriend Matthew Bird, 19, sent a message directly to Georgia on his Facebook site.

He said: "I love you so much Georgia Ferret Williams, you mean the world to me please just come back or get in contact with us. I need you and I miss you so much."

More than 3,500 friends have shared a missing person page on Facebook and have created a website to help find Georgia, daughter of a West Mercia Police detective constable. A team of

50 detectives is now involved in the investigation and forensics have searched the home of Mr Reynolds, who lived with his parents in Avondale Road, Wellington.

Georgia's devastated family yesterday said she had never gone missing before and described her disappearance as 'completely out of character'.

Police also appealed for information from anyone who may have seen a silver Toyota Hiace 300 GS panel van, registration CX06 ASV, which took a route from Wellington to Oswestry before moving on to Rhyl, Chester, Kendal in Cumbria and then Glasgow.

Mr Malik said: "If you think you saw this vehicle either en route or parked somewhere between Sunday evening and when we recovered it in a car park in Glasgow city centre yesterday then please let us know.

"The vehicle had ladders on the roof and we know it was driven by the suspect prior to his arrest."

Police said the last text messages and calls from her mobile phone were made at about 8pm on Sunday.

Supt Malik said that Georgia's disappearance was 'completely out of character' for the bright girl, who had been studying at college.

He added she had been due to take her first driving lesson this week and had missed a rendezvous to go and see a music concert with her boyfriend.

Supt Malik described the arrested man as a 'friend' of Georgia's.
