Stourbridge MP Miss James, who became the first openly lesbian Conservative MP at the last General Election, accused the Church of England of deliberately misleading the public about the Government's plans.

"I think the churches conducted a very disreputable campaign where they really distorted what the Government intended with this bill," she said.

Miss James, who spoke in favour of the Government's same-sex marriage bill in the House of Commons last week, accused certain sections of the Church of England of stoking up fears, leading people to believe churches would be required to conduct gay wedding ceremonies.

"I think it was truly shameful, both the Church of England and the Coalition for Marriage misled people," she said.
