Trees down in Wolverhampton as high winds blow in

Severe winds brought down trees as the bank holiday got under way to a blustery start.

As the unseasonably bad weather continued, gales battered the region.

One tree blocked a road after falling down in Pope Road, in the Underhill area of Wolverhampton, blocking the residential street.

Wolverhampton City Council officers were called out at 4pm yesterday to clear it away – but not before children took the opportunity to climb up it.

Spokesman for the city council Jack Bould said: "We were alerted to a fallen tree on Pope Road and contacted our Street Scene Team. They made the area safe and there was no reports of any damage."

Another fell down in Penn, Wolverhampton, smashing into a back garden.

Tracy Gacioppo-Smith, 42, had been shopping at Merry Hill in preparation for a week away in Wales when she returned about 4pm and found the massive tree in her back garden had fallen down. She said: "The tree smashed my fence and crushed the trampoline and the net.

"It just completely demolished everything underneath it."

Mrs Gacioppo-Smith, of Butts Road in Penn, said she believed the tree was an 80-year-old oak tree.

Forecasters say sunshine should be on the way for the rest of the weekend, with highs of 15C (59F) today and 16C (60.8F) tomorrow.

But on Monday, cloud will sweep in – and heavy rain is due to return to the region on Tuesday.
