The accident happened on the southbound carriageway, between junction one for West Bromwich and the M6 interchange at junction eight, at 7.45am.

It followed an earlier crash involving a car and van in the same place, in which a 23-year-old woman suffered suspected neck injuries.

Meanwhile, traffic congestion on the M6 was compounded by a blocked lane caused by a broken down car. This happened in the roadworks area between junction six at Spaghetti Junction and junction seven for Great Barr.

Confirming the crash involving three cars, a Highways Agency spokeswoman said: "We put a rolling road block on at 8.10am so we could move the vehicles involved to the hard shoulder. This lasted 10 minutes and the road was reopened again.

"Traffic was stretching back for a few junctions."

Speaking about the earlier M5 crash, West Midlands Police spokeswoman Gina Lycett said: "We were called at 6.55am today to two cars - a Vauxhall van and another car.

"It looks like a 23-year-old woman suffered minor injuries. The cars stopped on the hard shoulder so there was no obstruction."
