Former ice skating champion Katie Scarbrough attracted followers from across the globe when she began writing an online blog as a legacy for her two children.

She died, aged 32, on May 2 at St Giles Hospice, in Whittington, after suffering from bowel cancer.

She had hoped to take part in the Sutton Race for Life on June 29 at Sutton Park. But now the 5K run has been dedicated to the memory of Katie, of Fradley near Lichfield.

More than 40 of her friends are taking part in her honour, including Donna McAtamney, of Fradley, one of Katie's closest friends, who said: "Katie's strength and determination through difficult times has made us all look at our lives differently, treat every day as a gift and cherish those around us.

"Even at her lowest points she put others first and continued the fight which is what we all want to do on her behalf. Every step we take at Race for Life we'll be thinking of Katie who was a fighter to the end."

Katie is survived by husband Stuart and children Sam, aged eight, and Sophie, aged five. She started a blog to share her story, raise awareness and spread positivity among others who are battling cancer.

Paying tribute Paula Young, spokeswoman for Cancer Research UK, said the mother-of-two was an amazing lady.

"Katie was so looking forward to being our guest of honour at Race for Life that we felt it would be a fitting tribute to dedicate the event to her memory."
