Park patrol increase to combat dog mess

A crackdown on irresponsible dog owners looks set to be introduced in some parks across Staffordshire, it was revealed today.

Increased patrols by park rangers and new warning signs are among some of the options being considered by Lichfield District Council after a string of incidents, including a pet being attacked.

In one incident in Chase Terrace Park, Burntwood, an owner saw their dog attacked by another that was not on a lead.

Other issues surround residents not clearing up dog dirt, specifically at Burntwood Park and Stowe Fields, in Lichfield.

The council's regulatory and licensing committee was due to make a decision on the matter at a meeting on Thursday but it was adjourned and will now be discussed at a later date.

Committee chairman Councillor Bernard Derrick said: "The decision about the parks was adjourned at our last meeting. We want to get a bit more detail. It could take a few months before we make a decision.

"There have been isolated incidents of late. It's such an emotive issue with people. The main problem is dog mess as it is at most places across the region and country."

In a report to the regulatory and licensing committee it stated: "There is limited evidence to suggest the control of dogs in our parks is a significant problem.

"The biggest complaint is about dog faeces and other dog walkers not picking up. Complaints about the control of dogs are rare.

"Rangers intend to offer dog behaviour awareness sessions for users of the parks."

The council has also considered introducing Dog Control Orders which would mean all owners would need to keep their dogs on a lead when they are taking them out for a walk to a park.

Fixed penalty notices would be handed out if they were not kept on a lead.
