The pair suffered lower body injuries and the woman was airlifted to hospital.

The air ambulance landed in the middle of Stubbs Road, Penn Fields, after the crash, which happened at about 11.40am.

Police spokeswoman Deb Edmonds said: "It looks like two pedestrians were behind a parked car that has been shunted by another car."

She added: "It involved a male and female and both were seriously injured. Both suffered lower body and leg injuries due to the nature of the collision."

Stubbs Road was shut by police between Penn Road and Lea Road following the smash.

Pedestrians were not allowed past the cordon while investigations were carried out.

Officers were this afternoon taking statements from witnesses behind the cordon, while the two vehicles involved were surrounded by police cars.

Onlookers this afternoon spoke of their shock. Aarti Fanda, aged 23, of Napier Road, Blakenhall, said: "We were just on our way to the dentist in Stubbs Road and by the time we got here we saw an ambulance coming down and the road was all blocked off.

"The police cars were all coming in fast but first we saw an ambulance drive in quickly.

"I went inside the dentist and told the lady there and she said something bad had happened."

Drivers reported long delays in the area as officers diverted traffic.

Cars were queuing up from Park Street South on Goldthorn Hill, while motorists looking to get to Bradmore via Goldthorn Hill were having to go via Coalway Road and Bhylls Lane to join the Castlecroft Road into the area.

Around six police cars were on the scene, along with two ambulances and a paramedic.
