Lawyers for the Crown Prosecution Service will now decide if the 59-year-old will be prosecuted in court over his Facebook posts. Mr Kitson quit his position on Worcestershire County Council yesterday. He secured one of two Stourport seats up for grabs on the council 14 days ago.

But a series of anti-Semitic and anti-Islamic posts were discovered on Mr Kitson's Facebook profile page, sparking concerns from fellow councillors and constituents that they were 'inciting racial hatred'.

West Mercia Police today revealed Mr Kitson was interviewed and police also searched his Stourport home and took his computer.

West Mercia Police spokesman Toby Shergold said: "Councillor Eric Kitson from Stourport was voluntarily interviewed by officers from West Mercia Police over concerns raised by the public about allegedly offensive and racist comments made on social media.

"A computer was seized and a property in Stourport searched by police for evidence gathering purposes. A file has been submitted to the CPS for their consideration."

Mr Kitson said he was sorry for 'letting down' his friends, family and constituents.
