Cricket club in Stourbridge goes all out for pavilion

Members of a cricket club near Stourbridge are bowled over after coming up with an ingenious way of improving their pavilion.

While the changing facilities at Enville Cricket Club's ageing wooden pavilion were in desperate need of replacement, the cost of a whole new building proved prohibitive.

So members got their thinking caps on to come up with a solution for a new-look building.

And the result was a part new-build and a part revamp of the pavilion, costing £200,000.

The Enville club decided to rebuild the back half of the pavilion, where the changing rooms and showers were located, while restoring the timber lounge of the building and clubhouse at the front.

Club secretary Dave Thomas said the club was thrilled with the new building, which will be officially opened next month.

"The old building dated back to 1968, and water had got through the tiles," he said. "It has always been our intention to extend it eventually, but we wouldn't have got the money to build a whole club house so we decided to start with the changing facilities.

"It has been designed so the lounge can be built at a later date."

The £200,000 project was financed with the help of a £50,000 lottery grant through Sport England.

Financial help also came from the Bissill Charitable Trust through Enville Estates, as well as contributions from Cory Environmental Trust, Ibstock Cory Environmental Trust and Staffordshire Environmental Fund through the Landfill Communities Fund.

The new-look pavilion will be officially opened on June 8, with a summer ball.
